The Oakland Black Arts Movement
Business District (BAMBD) is backing Mayor Libby Schaaf’s announcement
of housing grants for East Oakland artists and is asking that the mayor
also secure housing and space for the artists in the district that was
officially designated by the City Council in January.
“We offer our condolences to the families of the tragic fire in the Fruitvale District,” said Marvin X of BAMBD.
“There is a need to upgrade dangerous living conditions citywide, and there is a great need to get people off the street living in tents.”
Marvin X supports the $1.7 million in grants that Mayor Schaaf approved, and says that funds could also be allocated for BAMBD.
“The first pillar of the BAMBD is housing, and we need emergency funds for artists housing and work space in our district.”
He said the organization is establishing the BAMBD Billion Dollar Trust Fund to meet the needs of the district, which is along the 14th St. corridor, from the Lower Bottoms in West Oakland to Lake Merritt.
BAMBD has recommended acquiring properties and placing them under the land trust and is asking residents to be given “life estate” titles to their units to alleviate homelessness.
Marvin X is co-founder the Black Arts Movement and a planner of the Black Arts Movement Business District.
